A letter to the CEO of Amazon

I am very passionate about taking care of the environment and I believe that the biggest step in making a change is if major companies start first.

Dear Mr. Andy Jassy,

Do you ever ask yourself why is there global warming? I ask myself this question every day and the answer is painful but what can we do when we all know that it’s because of us. All of us take a part in ruining the planet, however, there are those that can make a big impact in helping this stop. You are one of them. The major successful company, Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos and currently under your leadership, has a very large carbon footprint which you can eliminate and achieve an astonishing future. More specifically, big companies like Amazon, should do more to protect the planet to help the future of the 8 billion people living here and the 8.7 million species.

There are many ways that this kind of action can benefit the company. The image that Amazon has regarding the impact it is doing to the environment is bad. Amazon’s Sustainability Report in 2020 disclosed a 15% increase in its carbon footprint. Under present conditions your clients and the population in general will be very unhappy about this news.

Furthermore, healthy ecosystems clean our water, purify our air, maintain our soil, regulate the climate, recycle nutrients, and provide us with food. They provide raw materials and resources for medicines and other purposes. They are at the foundation of all civilization and sustain our economies. In other words, if we don’t act now, it may be too late, and we may cause more damage than we know. You can be part of the solution by ensuring that your carbon footprint is reduced and your negative impact on the ecosystem is kept at a minimum if not completely offset through alternative activities and contributions.

In contrast to all this, one might think that making all this happen is hard because it’s too expensive. However, Amazon is worth around $1.65 trillion, one of only five businesses to ever reach trillion dollars in net worth. To add on, in 2021, Amazon made a net profit of $121 billion dollars and five percent of this profit would translate to more than six billion dollars which would go a long way to make a positive contribution to the environment.

Upon many things, the impact that Amazon can do to the planet is a big deal. Amazon can change everything with its image and its action. The damage that Amazon can undo is massively beneficial to everyone and everything. As a young teenager, I have many hopes for Amazon as it is such a big company and a part of all our lives. And my young self can tell you that it’s not impossible, after all, impossible is really saying “I’m possible.”

Sincerely,

Haneen F. Ludin
