My American Voice
An essay on the experiences I have had as an American.
America has long been recognized as a melting pot, where diverse cultures combine to create something new and unique. With its array of clashing ideologies and a multitude of unique individuals, America offers a place where everyone can find their niche. It’s this inclusive environment that attracts refugees and immigrants from around the world. But what exactly draws them to America? The answer lies in the abundance of opportunities it provides. From my personal experience, I can attest to the opportunities for success that America has consistently presented. I have been given opportunities to receive an education, build new skills, and grow with the privilege that being an American has.
First and foremost, America has afforded me the opportunity to receive an education. Shockingly, according to a UNICEF article, over 600 million children worldwide lack access to a proper education. Education is vital in developing the skills necessary to contribute to our families and society. The concept of working smarter, not harder, has gained importance around the world, and a solid education is a prerequisite for achieving this approach. Thankfully, America offers free education for all its residents. By providing this opportunity, America enables its people to improve their quality of life. Additionally, American schools do not discriminate based on gender, religion, or race. On the other hand, in many underdeveloped countries like Afghanistan, girls do not have the right to an education beyond the sixth grade. If such a situation were to occur in America, countless girls who are making a difference in our society, including myself, would be deprived of an education.
Moreover, America is a land of numerous opportunities to learn new skills. It provides a color palette of resources that open doors to new paths and possibilities for everyone. For instance, teenagers in America can obtain their driver’s license as well as their pilot’s license while still in high school. In my case, I had the chance to pursue a lifeguard certificate. As a child, I found happiness and freedom in swimming. So, my mother enrolled me in a swimming course offered at the local gym. From knowing nothing about swimming, let alone lifeguarding, I progressed to the junior lifeguard course at the age of ten. Although I had to wait until I turned fifteen to obtain the lifeguard certificate, it is remarkable that I had achieved so much at such a young age.
Most of the opportunities I have been fortunate to encounter are closely linked to my school and the resources available at the community library. One remarkable opportunity offered by my school is the ability to learn at my own pace. Each year, my school administers an exam that assesses my growth and current knowledge level. Based on these results, I am placed in different classes that suit my existing knowledge. As a result, I am on track to graduate a year ahead of my peers. This flexibility is crucial for students worldwide as it allows them to continually grow. In many other countries, students are not afforded the freedom to switch classes based on their knowledge level, hindering their ability to demonstrate progress, which is a part of humanity.
Last but certainly not least, being an American comes with various privileges. Americans benefit from social services that enhance the lives of millions, ensuring financial stability and enabling us to travel, explore new hobbies, and simply enjoy life. Furthermore, possessing basic documents such as a passport, educational degrees, and proficiency in the English language carries immense privileges. As the world’s strongest economy, many countries seek American individuals to join their workforce, providing a significant advantage to Americans in their job search.
In conclusion, America has been an awe-inspiring place for me, offering many opportunities for an education, developing new skills, and the advantage of purely being part of the community. These opportunities extend beyond just my own experiences; they benefit everyone. While each person’s perception of America may differ, my personal journey has been similar to navigating a minefield, with the safe areas marked by the footprints of all the good-hearted individuals who walk the roads of America. I am deeply grateful that these opportunities are available to me, and I hope that all the people enjoying the varying colors of America can experience them too.
